their policies have a devastating impact on real people across the country. in michigan, governor rick snyder signed the law that puts a four-year lifetime limit on welfare. that means next month, nearly 41,000 michigan residents will stop getting welfare aid including nearly 30,000 children. thousands of innocent impoverished kids, abandoned by the state. in arizona, a new republican law punishes the families of prison inmates. to help deal with the state's deficit, the state has begun charge is $25 to visit someone in prison. it's called a quote, background check fee. but actually goes for maintenance and repairs. and in wisconsin, governor scott walker's budget cuts means some kids are going without. one school district is so worried about losing state funding, that has stopped giving milk to elementary school kids during snack time. these are the real government of gop priorities. and the people paying for them are the ones who can least afford them. we're going to keep calling republicans out for this injustice and we would like your help in doing it. come to our facebook page. and like

: the senator from michigan is recognized. mr. levin: mr. president, i come to pay tribute to the life and public service of mark hatfield. mark hatfield began his lifelong career of public service in the u.s. navy during world war ii. after the war, he returned to oregon, where he served in the state house of representatives, in the state senate, as the oregon secretary of state, and eventually as governor of the state. fortunately for us, for the senate, and for the country, mark hatfield did continue his career of public service and he went on to serve five terms in the united states senate. during his time in the senate, mark hatfield repeatedly demonstrated that he possessed the courage of his convictions. we've heard that word "courage" this afternoon by the oregon senators and others as it relates to mark hatfield and there are so many examples of that courage, including an unpopular position he took relative to the vietnam war. but in 1995, he opposed the balanced budget constitutional amendment which was then under consideration by the senate. it was a difficult position then
